California RN · License renewal · Updated August 2026
California nursing license renewal: active, first, or expired.
Start with the public license status, choose the matching California BRN route, and prepare only the CE proof that applies to that route before opening BreEZe.
The optional organizer is one payment, delivered as an instant ZIP, with no subscription and no certificate upload. It organizes your records; it does not renew a license or guarantee BRN acceptance.

Renew a California RN license in five verifiable checks.
Use these checks for the ordinary active-license route. If this is your first renewal, the license is already expired, or you are changing status, use the matching route above before relying on the standard checklist.
- 01
Verify the public RN license status
Check the current California DCA record before choosing a renewal path. Active, first-renewal, delinquent, inactive, and eight-year cases do not use one identical checklist.
- 02
Open the matching BreEZe transaction
Use the California BRN online renewal route only when the renewal window and public status match your situation.
- 03
Confirm the CE rule that applies
The standard active-renewal rule is 30 contact hours every two years, but an eligible first renewal and other status changes can follow different requirements.
- 04
Pay and clear every listed deficiency
A processed payment does not by itself prove the renewal is complete. Review the BreEZe account for fingerprints, disclosures, or another outstanding item.
- 05
Save proof and recheck the public status
Keep the confirmation, receipt, CE records, and original certificates, then verify that the public license status reflects the completed renewal.
Quick answer from the California BRN
Expired less than eight years? Prepare three things.
- 1. BreEZe renewalUse the online renewal route for a license delinquent no more than eight years.
- 2. Delinquent feePayment is required, but payment alone does not clear every deficiency.
- 3. Recent CE proofDocument 30 eligible hours completed within the two years before submission.

The rule people miss
There is no post-expiration grace period.
The BRN says practice is not permitted on a delinquent or inactive license. Verify that the status is active before returning to California nursing work.
Stop and verify status
California does not provide a grace period after expiration. Confirm the license status in BreEZe before practicing.
Check the eight-year boundary
A license delinquent by no more than eight years can generally be renewed online. Eight years or longer follows a different reinstatement path.
Complete recent CE
For a delinquent renewal under eight years, the BRN says the 30 contact hours must have been completed within the two years before submission.
Resolve every deficiency
Payment alone does not complete renewal. Review the BreEZe account for fingerprints, disclosures, or other outstanding items.
Build the record first
Log only CE completed in the applicable window.
Use the free tracker to total recent contact hours and record the provider, CEP number, completion date, and certificate for every course.
Expired less than eight years
The BRN FAQ describes online renewal through BreEZe with the delinquent fee and proof of 30 hours completed within the preceding two years.
Expired eight years or longer
Do not rely on the ordinary renewal route. The BRN uses an eight-year reinstatement or retake process depending on current licensure and competency evidence.
