Do work hours count as CE for California RN renewal?

Ordinary clinical work hours do not replace CE contact hours. California requires continuing-education courses completed through a recognized provider. An employer course can be different from a shift—but count it only after checking the course, provider, timing, stated hours, and completion proof.

Course content and work experience are not the same thing.

A course may teach direct patient-care knowledge and qualify as CE. That does not turn the hours spent delivering patient care into a course. Do not invent a provider, completion date, or contact-hour total from a timecard.

Five common situations

Separate the shift from the course.

01

Ordinary paid clinical shifts

Do not enter scheduled work hours as CE contact hours. The BRN renewal rule calls for continuing-education courses completed through a recognized provider.

02

Employer orientation

Do not count orientation merely because it took time or covered workplace procedures. The BRN lists orientation programs among unacceptable courses.

03

Employer course with CE credit

It may be usable only if it is an eligible continuing-education course, falls inside the applicable renewal period, and has provider and completion proof you can verify.

04

Basic CPR or BLS

Do not assume the time counts. The BRN lists basic CPR and BLS courses among unacceptable courses, while some advanced certification or recertification content is treated differently.

05

Advanced course or certification training

Course content related to direct or indirect patient care may be acceptable, but the content, provider, timing, stated contact hours, and proof still need to satisfy the live BRN requirements.

Before adding the hours

Find five facts on the provider record.

  1. 01

    Course title

Use the provider-issued title, not the name of your hospital unit or job role.

  2. 02

    Provider and CEP status

Identify the issuing provider and verify the live provider status in BreEZe when a California CEP number applies.

  3. 03

    Completion date

Confirm that the course was completed during the renewal period that applies to your license.

  4. 04

    Contact hours

Use the contact-hour amount stated by the provider; do not convert shift length or study time into CE hours yourself.

  5. 05

    Original completion proof

Keep the certificate or grade slip. The BRN says RNs must retain this proof for four years in case of an audit.

If the course is eligible

Keep the provider-issued proof—not the timecard.

The $9 Audit Pack gives you an offline CE ledger, certificate index, renewal checklist, and backup-ready folder structure. It organizes the proof you already have; it does not decide course eligibility or create CE credit.

Official sources

Check the live BRN rule before counting a course.

The BRN requires 30 contact hours every two years for the standard active renewal, identifies acceptable and unacceptable course types, and requires certificates or grade slips to be kept for four years.

California RN work-hours and CE FAQ

Can I use direct patient-care work hours instead of CEUs?

Ordinary work hours are not a substitute for the required continuing-education contact hours. A course about direct or indirect patient care may be acceptable when it meets the BRN course and provider requirements, but performing the work itself is different from completing a CE course.

Does hospital training count toward California RN renewal?

It depends on the training. Do not count it unless the issuer identifies it as eligible continuing education, states the contact hours and completion details, and the provider and timing satisfy the current BRN requirements.

Does employee orientation count as CE?

The California BRN lists orientation programs among unacceptable courses. Keep orientation time separate from your renewal CE total.

Do CPR or BLS hours count?

The BRN lists basic CPR and BLS courses among unacceptable courses. Some advanced certification or recertification skills may be acceptable, so verify the exact course rather than relying on the topic name alone.

What should I keep if an employer course does count?

Keep the provider-issued certificate or grade slip and record the course title, provider, CEP number when applicable, completion date, and stated contact hours. Retain the original proof for the BRN-stated four-year period.
