Move an inactive RN license back to active.
Inactive status keeps a license current but does not permit California RN practice. Reactivation requires a separate request and a current compliance record.
Prepare these four items
Recent CE proof
Organize 30 contact hours completed within the past two years through recognized providers.
Fingerprint compliance
Certify compliance with the fingerprint requirement that applies to active status.
Required disclosures
Prepare accurate answers about license discipline and convictions.
BreEZe request
Use the “Inactive to Active” request and review the account for any deficiency after submission.
Timing trap
Reactivation does not reset the renewal date.
The same expiration date remains. The BRN notes that another 30 hours will be required at renewal, so check how close the current cycle is to expiring before planning CE.
Online versus email
The BRN says complete online requests may be processed within 72 hours, while email requests may take two to four weeks. Those are published estimates, not guarantees; account deficiencies can delay the result.
