California-approved provider
Verify that the continuing-education provider has an active California BRN CEP number through DCA License Search.
Direct participation
The BRN describes this as a direct-participation course. Keep the course format and completion evidence supplied by the provider.
Completed on time
The completion date should fall within the first two years immediately following initial California licensure.
Complete certificate
Retain your name, course title, date, one contact hour, provider name, and CEP number together.
First-renewal trap
“Exempt from 30” does not mean “exempt from everything.”
A nurse who qualifies for the first-renewal exemption enters the BRN's EXEMPT/NCLEX record for the standard total, but should separately retain proof of the one-hour implicit-bias course.

When is the California RN implicit-bias course due?
The California BRN says a licensee still within the first two years immediately following initial licensure must complete one hour of direct participation in an implicit-bias course from a BRN-approved continuing-education provider.
Does the first-renewal 30-hour exemption include implicit bias?
No. The BRN states that the first-two-years exemption from the ordinary CE requirement does not include the one-hour implicit-bias requirement.
What if I completed implicit-bias training after renewing?
Keep the provider-issued certificate with its true completion date, compare it with the initial-license and renewal dates, check BreEZe for any deficiency or notice, and ask the BRN for account-specific instructions. Do not backdate or change the provider record.
Will a late course automatically revoke my license?
